Koenig Alumni Center

The Founding Era

The Koenig Alumni Center is one of CU Boulder’s oldest and most historic buildings, offering a direct connection to the university’s earliest years. Built in 1884 as the residence for the university president and family, the home was part of a small group of buildings funded shortly after the university’s founding. The original structure contained 10 rooms, a bath, laundry facilities, a cellar and a furnace room, reflecting the growth and ambitions of the young institution.

For more than eight decades, generations of university presidents lived in the building as it evolved to meet changing needs. The residence was periodically remodeled and expanded, serving not only as a family home but also as a gathering place for university and community events. In 1968, a gift from Samuel A. Koenig made it possible to purchase a new off-campus residence for the president. The historic building was subsequently dedicated as the Alumni Center, marking one of CU Boulder’s earliest efforts to adaptively reuse a historic campus structure.

Today, the Koenig Alumni Center serves as the home of the CU Boulder Alumni Association and remains a welcoming gathering place for alumni, students and visitors. Located on the edge of campus at the corner of Broadway and University Avenue, the beautifully preserved building hosts meetings, celebrations, ceremonies and campus events while continuing to connect generations of Buffs to the university’s rich history. Its historic character and enduring role in campus life make it one of CU Boulder’s most treasured landmarks.
